Software takes on a life of its own. 

During the first release, you may believe work is done according to plan . someone (the custormer for instane) has an idea of what the software should do, and has that built. After that, the software is 'born', it is put into the world. After that, it leads a life of it own.

The original inventors see, that the software did not turn out quite as they expected (which can be both above as below expectation). 

Third parties (users, systems administrators etc.) take it up and use the software in their own way. Sometimes as the inventors thought it should be used, other times quite differently. Often they come up with additional wishes. The software is modified, and so it goes round. After a while, it is highly likely that none of the original inventors, programmers and users are still working on the software, but others - the software lives a life of its' own.

Here is a quote from the timeless way of building by Christopher Alexander I find fitting:

As a company name, I liked it, because I live from software, and started out as an independent to get as much as possible out of life.
